New Children’s Picture Book!

I’m very happy to announce the publication this week of my latest children’s picture book, I Love You Forever, illustrated by the talented Shelagh McNicholas and published by tiger tales. It’s my first rhyming text, and you’d be surprised how hard it can be to finesse rhymes and rhythm while making sense of a story at the same time! But Shelagh’s endearing illustrations and the quality of the paper and the die-cut cover really elevate this story to the status …

Happy Birthday, my dear Holmes!

Raise a glass of sherry to Sherlock Holmes on January 6 this year, as he turns 161 years old. Still going strong in books, movies, and TV, the great detective famously said in A Study in Scarlet, “I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose….It is a mistake to think that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon …

The dangers of die cut!

Just got a new copy of my upcoming picture book, I Love You Forever–this time, with the die cut on the cover removed. Now the image is glued to the cover (top version). This decision was made when the publisher discovered that a child’s head had somehow got stuck in another book’s die-cut hole!  Oh, kids these days…!

New Cover Art for Upcoming Picture Book

So pleased to see the cover art for my next children’s picture book, now entitled I Love You Forever, and scheduled for a spring 2015 release. The lovely illustrations are by UK artist Shelagh McNicholas. I feel so fortunate to have her artwork grace the pages of my story! Enjoy.

Chatting with Rosalyn Landor

Thrilled to have a wonderful phone chat with British actress Rosalyn Landor, who narrated the audiobook for My Dear Watson! She played Helen Stoner in the “Adventure of the Speckled Band” episode with Jeremy Brett in the ’80s BBC production of “Sherlock Holmes.” A great discussion of our lives, plans, and careers. She was sweetly complimentary about my writing, and we agreed that it’s important to show our grown children that life doesn’t end at age 50 (as Holmes shows …

My Dear Watson in Japanese!

So pleased to announce that My Dear Watson is now available in a Japanese edition! Print on demand only, no digital edition. It won the Special Prize for Excellence in the international Suntory Mystery Novel competition. I was lucky enough to be flown to Tokyo years ago for the judging ceremony–I’ll never forget that experience! If you know anyone who reads Japanese, here’s a good mystery read for them. Arigato!

Children’s Book Week

It’s Children’s Book Week this week–May 13-19. What are your favorite children’s books? Most people have at least one favorite that they’ll never forget and that perhaps changed their life. Some of mine include Where the Wild Things Are; Hailstones and Halibut Bones; The Phantom Tollbooth; Harriet the Spy; the Madeline books; and Throw a Kiss, Harry! I have memories of my father reading me The Wind in the Willows, The Hobbit, and the original Oz books. When I had …

Holiday Season Reading

What are you reading this month? If you’re between seasons of the BBC show, Sherlock, or if your appetite for Holmes is whetted by watching the CBS show, Elementary, try My Dear Watson–my pastiche novel written by Holmes rather than by Watson. Wouldn’t you like to get inside the mind of the greatest detective of all time? If you’re looking for picture books for young children, I can offer several to choose from. I’ve been lucky enough to work with …
